Imagine sitting in your bedroom in safety and comfort. Suddenly, the floor beneath you gives way, and you find yourself falling into nothingness. May Allah protect us from that, Ameen.
Recently in the news, a 37 year old Florida man was swallowed up by the earth when a sinkhole appeared right beneath his bedroom. His brother jumped in and tried to save him but couldn’t locate him. Subhanallah, when I read this news story, two things from the Quran came to my mind:
1. Surah Al Mulk which is recited every night before going to bed
Do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway? [Al Mulk 67:16]
Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, “Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant. [ Al Qasas 28:76]
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.” [Al Qasas 28:77]
He said, “I was only given it because of knowledge I have.” Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked. [Al Qasas 28:78]
So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, “Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qarun. Indeed, he is one of great fortune.”[Al Qasas 28:79]
But those who had been given knowledge said, “Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient.” [Al Qasas 28:80]
And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah , nor was he of those who [could] defend themselves. [Al Qasas 28:81]
Our daily azhkaar should include this:
Aban bin ‘Uthman narrates: I heard ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said:
A person who recites the following supplication three times in the evening, will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity until he wakes up in the morning; and if he recites it three times in the morning, he will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity until the evening time : ‘In the name of Allah, with the blessings of whose name, nothing in the earth nor in the heavens can harm (anyone), and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing'” (Reported by Abu Dawoud and At-Tirmidhi and said it is a sound authentic Hadith)
بِسمِ الّلهِ الَّذي لاَ يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسمِهِ شَيأُُ فِي الأَرضِ وَ لاَ فِي السّمَاءِ وَ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيم
I remember reciting this dua when we were flying from Ohio to New Mexico back in 2009, during our big move. We were in the air at the time and I felt the significance of this dua as opposed to saying it when we were on the ground. But now, saying it on the ground gives new meaning, with the new knowledge that sinkholes are quite realistic possibilities.
