Tafseer Maryam Day 10 Ayat 24-26

  • in Ayat 22-23, in passage about Maryam and birth of Isa a.s., we enter the second phase where she actually is pregnant and ready to deliver
  • in Surah Muminoon Allah tells us about the place Maryam secluded herself to to deliver – it’s an elevated place, comfortable, has good vantage point,  and water is easily accessible

    And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.

  • then she starts to feel child moving inside of her, or contractions and compels her to get up and goes to trunk of date palm to lean against it and said she wished she had died before this happened because of her high sense of hayaa
  • she doesn’t want people talking about her modesty and more importantly talking bad about the deen
  • “This is what those religious people do..”
  • she’s feeling so apprehensive that she’s saying things of this nature
  • right away you see mercy of Allah and how Allah comes to her aid
  • usually when women experience first pregnancy that’s when they need more people to take care of her
  • Maryam is a vessel of this miracle, called by Allah to do this and she has to forgo those normal luxury and comfort typical pregnant women would want
  • but Allah doesn’t leave you hanging
  • when you ‘go to bat’ for the deen, Allah takes care of you if no one else is there to take care of you
  • Maryam was willing to make this unbelievable sacrifice for the deen, so Allah comes to her aid

Ayat 24

Sahih International

But he called her from below her, “Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

  • fanaadaahaa – someone called out to her
  • 2 things:
  • in next part of the ayah it says min tahtihaa (from below her)
  1. even in ayat of surah muminoon 23:50, already we know she is at an elevated location, so if someone call from below, it could be an angel – opinion of vast majority [Qatadah, Ibn Abbas, Dahaaq, etc], he’s letting her know what arrangements Allah has specially made for her
  2. in another variation on the mushaf is man tahtihaa (one who was below her) – based on this some scholars say this was Isa a.s. speaking to her from her womb
  • in Ayat 29-30 – one of Isa a.s. miracles was that he spoke as an infant, that’s already a miracle in and of itself
  • we’re not talking about what Isa a.s. is capable of, we’re talking about what Allah is capable of
  • whatever is contained within a vessel if a representative of the honor and dignity that that vessel is
  • you don’t put gold and diamonds in a trash bag
  • Allah can do as He pleases
  • if Allah can make an infant speak, what’s to say that He can’t make an infant speak from inside the womb?
  • opinions of Mujaahid, Hasan Al Basri etc
  • but majority opinion says it’s the angel
  • at end of day there is nothing hindering us from accepting both opinions
  • in that is the beauty of the Quran
  • narration of Hasan ‘Aasim – min tahtihaa
  • the angel down there from below her. Why?
  • he initially approached her but with her haya and chastity, she prefers even the angel to stay at a distance, and so he stays at a distance
  • this is a divine courier but look at him respecting the privacy of Maryam
  • we need to respect people’s personal privacy/personal space
  • if someone would like you to stay at a distance, it’s something someone is entitled to
  • American culture – people really appreciate personal space
  • in other cultures there is very little personal space
  • we should never just make blanket statement any particular element of a culture because every culture has good aspects to it

alla tah7zanee

  • allaa = an + laa
  • an :- explanation (what was the gist of his message) tafsiriyyah

laa tahzanii – don’t you dare feel sorry for yourself, don’t grieve, don’t be sad, don’t be in sorrow because you are somebody who is going to become a legend, people will look up to you

  • and when Allah will reveal His word in most mirculous form your name and story will be mentioend in it, (Quran) so don’t be sad, something amazing is happening and you’re part of it
  • don’t be sad, yes things are getting a little difficult but Allah has not left you alone
  • like when Musa  a.s. says “No, my Rabb is with me,” when he was caught between the Red Sea and Firawn and his people
  • when Prophet saw said to Abu Bakr laa tahzan (don’t be sad) Allah is with us when they were in the cave Thawr


  • root of word means someone very dignified and notable in character
  • minority of mufasiroon -: inside of you, Allah has made some one of high nobility and conduct
  • vast majority of mufassiroon and scholars, even some narrations traced back to Prophet saw (albeit they are said to be weak narrations) but there is a group of scholars of Quran that when we are interpreting Quran, we take weak narration over any linguistic interpretation
  • but we also find that in Arabic language, sariyy refers to a small stream
  • how it comes from same root, Allah knows best
  • literally, the scholars of the language, classical scholars of tafseer, when they quote root of something these are people they quote, but when sheikh looked up how stream is connected to someone of high character, they said they can’t find any reason, logic for how they’re connected
  • this is a very good reminder at end of the day
  • as natives speakers of non Arabic such as English, when we start becoming student of Arabic it spoils us, because there is so much structure in Arabic, we expect everything to have a root, etc but it’s still a language and language is based on people and people are random too, so will too be language
  • surah Muminoon 23:50

  • ma’een – water that rises to the surface

qad ja’ala rabbuki tahtaki sariyya – your lord has literally right underneath you, very accessibly has made a stream for you

  • ‘Allah has made’ – opens door to slight possibility that there was no stream there before
  • fact that He is phrasing it in this way, it could also refer to , some scholars say that when Maryam went into panic, the stream erupted from ground and flowed immediately
  • there is in history another incident like this also :
  • story of well of zamzam and how it came into existence – to come to aid of the family of the prophets
  • Maryam was told not to feel sad because this is part of something great and she’s part it
  • if Maryam was feeling regret why she left home and that it would or might have been better if she stayed with her people, but no, no Allah has taken care of you here (stream and in following ayat Allah provided food too)
  • if we take understanding that stream wasn’t there before, then that is not only sign to her that she is still in good graces of Allah, but if someone were to come by here, they would see a random stream flowing and she was taken care of, even those people would have to admit there is something special about this young woman

Ayat 25

Sahih International

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

  • wahuzzi – in command form

hazza yahuzzu – to shake something that is really big, heavy, you have to literally throw yourself at it

  • she’s being told she gotta shake something really big and heavy
  • ilayki – towards yourself
  1. pull it towards yourself
  2. when you shake this it’s for your own benefit
  • she might be thinking that she’s pregnant, in pain and now I’m being told to shake something very heavy , so #2 is a response to that

bijizh’in nakhlah – trunk of a date palm

  • a young woman who is pregnant, emotionally traumatized, in pain, is being told to grab a date palm by the trunk and shake away
  1. some scholars in tafaaseer mention that exhibiting what we call superhuman strength is possible, could be a miracle here, she could do it
  • imagine seeing that, that’d be amazing. That is one possibility

2. majority of mufasiroon say this :

  • she couldn’t even make a dent, nothing happened/moved, but then why is she being told to do this? Look at rest of ayah

tusaaqiT – for something to fall

  • but it’s in specific verb form that is in present/future form -> it will drop/happen. you do this and that will happen
  • this verb pattern it comes from can mean for something to happen repeatedly, it will continue to fall

ruTab – dates

  • but specifically dates that are very fresh

janiyyan– they are ripe, ready to be plucked

  • they’re not at point where they’re not ready to be taken from the tree or have fallen on the ground but they’re right there just ready to fall
  • just a little shake and it will fall
  • very very fresh ready to fall dates will continue to fall , you will have a steady stream falling down
  1. maybe this is a miracle and she was exhibiting superhuman strength and shaking the tree
  2. but majority of scholars say no, but that she is still commanded to do this


  • through this Allah is educating Maryam and all of us that you have to take the means
  • Allah is able to do things without means, like Isa a.s.
  • but at least if not complete means is there, you have partial means (in case of Isa a.s. the mother is there)
  • Allah is reminding her and us, that you have to assume the means, don’t expect things to always happen miraculously
  • Prophet saw taught us to take, utilize the means
  • you need to utilize the means, even if that means to try and shake the tree, even a little bit, it’s some type of effort being exerted
  • this is part of natural order, part of hukm of Allah
  • we should be conscious of that
  • we should never be so far gone in what wemight perceive to be reliance upon Allah to a point that we feel we are above and beyond the means
  • Umar al Khattab r.a. reprimanded people who behave like this, he said this is not tawakkul, this is opposite of tawakkul
  • hadith(gist) -: Prophet saw congratulates, praises the one who works very hard and then puts his trust in Allah and condemns one who sits back and says he puts his trust in Allah
  • she being told to shake the tree to get rizq, food, sustenance
  • through example of Maryam, someone who should not be made to work in this particular condition,  Allah is minimally making her work to get that food
  • it becomes praiseworthy that when you as a father, husband when you are responsible to feed, care for someone, going out and earning living, that is extremely praiseworthy
  • religious extremism -: when we go beyond limits of the deen
  • people may come up to people who serve the deen, imam and saying “make dua for us, we’re out there chasing the world 24/7”
  • no, if you’re doing something halalm serving your family, you’re doing something great, praiseworthy, don’t belittle that
  • after initial obligations of praying 5 times a day, is to go and earn a halal living, it’s something admirable
  • so we shouldn’t get caught in this trap “I’m slaving away after the dunya”
  • no, you’re providing for your family and if you maintain your deen while you do it, it’s a form of worship
  • at same time we shouldn’t create this culture where people are at work
  • prophet saw used to say to take refuge from being lazy
  • we should tip our hats to people who are hardworking and working halal out there

another reflection here:

  • does it logically make sense for a pregnant woman in labor to be told to shake a huge tree?
  • but we don’t have to be told that she shook the tree, of course she did
  • when Allah tells us to do something, occasionally, in some matters of the deen, you might not be able to completely process why you’re being told to do something like this
  • the test for the person at that time is to do it
  • e.g. I”m being told to fast and it’s summer, medically, logically it doesn’t make sense to me
  • majority of scholars say Maryam was not able to shake the tree but she put forth her best effort
  • we see something miraculous happen, she did what is equivalent of touching the tree
  • she probably just touched the tree and fruits fall and continue to fall
  • when you listen to Allah, He’ll take care of you
  • we just need to learn to listen and do

final reflection:

  • there is honor for Maryam in this as well
  • Allah is capable of making fruits fall regardless
  • but at same time, it’s kind of like being waited on hand and foot, so when someone is being waited on hand and foot, like when you have a bell and you ring it and you will be served
  • so that you can express your need when you feel like it
  • so Maryam is being told kind of like touching the tree is like her ‘bell’
  • Allah is telling her that His creation is at her service, just touch the tree and food will come
  • that implicit repetition that is in that verb form is like an evidence for that
  • anytime you feel like it, just touch the tree


Ayat 26

Sahih International

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.’ “

fakulee – so eat

  • when you’re told to eat, it would mean like “eat however much whenever you want”

washrabii – drink freely

waqarri ‘aynan – and make your eyes cool, cool your eyes (figure of speech, an expression in classical Arabic – to find comfort, solace, peace and tranquility in something)

  • it could have general meaning of eat and drink however much you like and sit back and enjoy yourself , stop fretting, being nervous
  • but when we look within the Quran, this expression of coolness of the eyes is always used when talking about children
  • like firawn’s wife said when she found baby Musa a.s.
  • and at end of surah furqan , the dua (qurrata a’yun)

    Sahih International

    And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”

  • we find strong relationship in this word with children
  • children are that thing that can bring so much happiness to a person’s life
  • it means : eat drink, relax because very soon you will be receiving a child and all the difficulty you have endured is about to go away, because when you hold that beautiful baby in your arms, that’s it, everything will be forgotten
  • we see that when a woman gives birth to a child, she goes through so much difficulty but when that child is handed to her, nothing matters anymore except that child, so much peace and comfort comes from the child
  • faimma – and if
  • tarayyinna – you see
  • noon at end is for emphasis
  • emphasis implies that if you see at all
  • minal bashari ahadan – from people, anyone person
  • that stress is being removed from her, eat drink relax
  • and if any human being approaching you right now, pestering, questioning you, she is being told…
  • faqoolee inni nazhartu – so you say, I have made a commitment
  • lirahmaan
  • this is representative of the iman of Maryam
  • when the young handsome man approached her, she didn’t say innii a’oozhu bi rahman, she didn’t say Allah
  • here again she is being told to say ar rahmaan
  • this shows her iman, even though she is going through all of this, her feeling, view with regard to Allah is that she can’t help but see the mercy of Allah and she learns to appreciate the mercy
  • we need to find that same perspective :- appreciate the mercy of Allah in our lives


  • opinion of majority of mufassiroon :-
  • sawm would usually mean to abstain from food and drink
  • but previously she was told to eat and drink freely, so majority of mufasiroon say Sawm here used in its lexical, literal, linguistic meaning
  • the origin, root of the word means to abstain from anything
  • it’s only in fiqh terminology that it means to abstain from food, drink, physical relation from this time to that time
  • fa lan fa here for explanation

fa lan ukallima – my commitment to abstain is that I will not speak

al yawma insiyyan -today, to any human being

  • insaan, an naas might be singular words but they represent plural big meanings

insiyy – one of those naas, insaan, one human being

  • she was told to make this vow of silence
  • why human being? because angels still communicating with her
  • why is this type of commitment being made?
  • she’s dealing wit very unique circumstances, historically speaking no one has been in this predicament before
  • so how to explain to people
  • when you don’t know what to say just remain quiet
  • the people who are probably going to come up to question are not doing it with good intentions, they probably want to debate
  • so is there any benefit to talking to them? Peace out, I got nothing to say to you, talk to you later
  • imam Shafie says “Every time I debated with an ignorant person I lost.”
  • you can’t beat ignorance
  • you present a proof and he says “So?”
  • either you walk away or break his face, so you walk away
  • she’s being told to being silent than talk to these people who just want to slander and break you down
  • you can’t explain it so just be silent
  • couple of ayah down, Allah says that “you be quiet. We will speak on your behalf, We will provide an explanation that will blow people’s minds”
  • Tomorrow’s session we will see what a mind blowing response Allah gave
  • discussion among scholars whether this is a legitimate form of worship that is to be practiced. No
  • this is unique to Maryam, not a general form of worship to be observed
  • hadith in Muwatta of Imam Malik where Prophet saw saw a man standing in middle under the sun and he asked what’s up with this guy. And a sahabah said that this man has made a vow not to speak to anyone, seek shade from the sun, sit and will continue to fast in this condition. Prophet saw said to command him this: start talking to people, go into shade, sit down, but he should continue his fast
  • so fast is legitimate but everything else is not
  • another narration where Prophet saw saw a man who was standing up and tied himself to something and Prophet saw asked what’s going on and the man says he’s making it a form of worship for Allah. Prophet saw told him it’s not a form of worship and that Allah doesn’t like that one would punish himself this way and this is ridiculous, untie yourself and sit down
  • Abu Bakr was told about a woman who would not speak to people in a long time, she made this oath. Abu Bakr told the people that most definitely Islam has destroyed these types of practice and told them to tell her to speak
