Tafseer Surah Yaseen 30-32

Recap:

  • in previous session, passage talked of a town and people of that town and messengers sent to them but they refused them
  • a man from farthest part of city came to support their dawah and cause
  • when he did speak up and supported the messengers, the people killed him
  • then Allah gave him the honor to speak from the hereafter and talk about what he experienced from the benevolence, forgiveness of life of hereafter
  • today 3 ayah, these 3 ayah are a bit of a conclusion to that passage

Ayat 30

36:30
Sahih International
How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.
  • previous passage ended with Allah speaking directly and about punishment falling upon those people
  • now Allah talks in first person
  • ya hasratan يَا حَسرَة   – oh how hopeless is the situation of the slaves
  • hasrah حَسرَه   – a strong word, sounds strong and meaning is also strong
  • even stronger than remorse (nadam نَدَم  )
  • hasrah – literally when a person becomes completely hopeless
  • haseer  in surah mulk
    67:4
    Sahih International

Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued.

  • this person sees no light at end of tunnel, no hope for His mercy
  • last ayah talks about one blinding scream that made the people’s heads explode and it put them out
  • now Allah refers to them as slaves
  • ‘ibaad  عِبَاد    – plural of ‘abd
  • can only be used for talking about the slaves of Allah
  • when you use the word slaves generally you use ‘abeed عَبِيد  , but when specifically talking about slaves of Allah, word ‘ibaad  عِبَاد  used
  • why their situation so hopeless?
  • no messengers every came to them except that they would mock him, make fun of him, treat him in appropriate;ly
  • istihzaa  إستِهزَى  – make fun of somebody in a very foolish way,
  • making fun of anyone is not appropriate
  • but istihzaa إستِهزَى   is humiliation
  • just to make things up
  • when you make fun of somebody and you make things up
  • you make a joke and then starts making things up to get more laughs
  • saying senseless things
  • even when we say that it should make us uncomfortable, especially about messengers, get a kick out of making fun of messengers?
  • name of town, messengers, people not provided, because this is like a template, an analysis, it happens over and over again throughout history
  • Muhammad saw, it’s a consolation to him because this happened to others as well
  • but now Allah showing how things ended up
  • people in Makkah who spoke up for prophet saw were beaten, tortured, killed in broad daylight
  • however, no matter how bleak situation becomes, it always works out in the end
  • this template, analysis is being provided
  • they even went beyond all limits just to make fun of these messengers
  • so Allah is showing that in the end it always works out
  • one interesting thing that goes back to beauty of Quran and precision of the words used
  • zukhruf 6 & 7 – similar discussion
  • 43:6
    Sahih International

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,

    43:7
    Sahih International

But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

  • there, Allah uses word nabi نَبِي
  • but in here, yaseen, allah uses word rasul رَسُول
  • because in the beginning mursaleen, used
  • mursal مُرسَل   from rasul رَسُول has been used consistently in this surah, shows consistency of language of surah, fits with the surah
Ayat 31
36:31
Sahih International
Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them – that they to them will not return?
  • this is now talking about people of Quraysh
  • have they not seen, understood all the generations of people who came before them, how We have destroyed them and they’re not going to be coming back?
  • in present and future tense – they’re not going to come back
  • “don’t wait up late for me”
  • said in very subtle way but a very strong statement
  • they were eradicated, erased, never to appear again, to the point where sometimes there weren’t even any remnants of these people left behind
Ayat 32
36:32
Sahih International

And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.

  • history is repeating itself
  • it happens time and time again previously but now it’s happening again now with quraysh
  • they will all be gathered together and brought in front to Allah, all these people who were eradicated and removed
  • that accountability is being reminded
  • not that these people did this horrendous act and they were destroyed, but on the Day of Judgment they will all be gathered, brought back, made to stand before Allah and the decision will be made for them
  • mu7dharoon  مُحضَرُون   – they will be made to stand before, it isn’t said  7haadhiroon حَاضِرُون   “they will present themselves”
  • they will be treated like hoards of wild animals, chained, cuffed, forced to be presented before Allah
  • in surah Israa – where Allah talks about this justice, this is true justice in its ultimate form
  • “You tell me what I should do with you”
  • like when a kid brings in a bad report card to you and you read it, put it back down and say to him “you tell me what I should do with you”
  • similarly on Day of judgment when we have our book
Underlying lessons:
  • Allah showing us the progression of dawah
  • we saw aggression that took place, requires people to speak up
  • a person’s dawah , he may not get to see the fruits of his labor immediately
  • the man, they killed him
  • but in hereafter Allah gave him the most generous and amazing reward
  • as consolation and to build conviction in what we’re standing for and living by is the truth, at end of day, Allah never lets the dawah be completely removed, humiliated
  • there are hard times and low points, but there is nowhere where dawah completely eradicated
  • in Makkah it was very difficult but look what happened, Allah brought that glorious day of conquest of Makkah
  • in surah Saffaat – it has already been proven, Our word for our slaves who are messengers that they most definitely are helped by Allah exclusively at all times and that our army will most definitely for them be dominant
  • in Surah Qamar – Nuh a.s., he dealt with a lot of difficulty but eventually he prayed saying he’s being overcome, so help …
  • we saw how Allah came to his aid and rescue and wiped the disbelievers out
  • the most amazing events in terms of natural disaster that happened at that time
  • dawah will never diminish, it will always remain
  • surah israa – the truth has arrived and falsehood has completely gone
  • 17:81
    17:81 Sahih International

And say, “Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.”

  • baattil (injustice, falsehood, ) is meant to go away, it’s temporary
  • food is supposed to spoil, not supposed to last forever
  • Surah Ra’d – … then the valleys became flooded all the way to the top and the water that is flooded there has the foam, debris, this foam is eventually going to evaporate and debris will settle to the bottom and that which benefits people, stays here in the earth
  • 13:17
    13:17
    Sahih International

He sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus Allah presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus does Allah present examples.

  • this is example of truth and falsehood
  • truth comes, falsehood rises to top, when we look on top we see that falsehood but it eventually expires and it goes away and that which benefits people remains
  • that’s what we should focus on
  • if truly our intent is just to help humanity
  • the prophet saw wanted to better people’s situation
  • if that is at the root of what we’re trying to accomplish, then we should to keep press forward, continue to do good, help people, better people’s situation, bring them peace tranquility, fulfillment in life by finding Allah
  • that will prosper, overcome any obstacle and difficulty
  • at end of day, Ayat 32
  • 36:32
    Sahih International

And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.

  • who’s right and who’s wrong is not a decision I have to make
  • everybody will stand in front of Allah whether he wants to or not, and He will make the decision and judgment
